Introduction to Viral Bioinformatics

Overview

Viruses infect all life forms, including animals, plants, fungi, bacteria and archaea. They are the most abundant type of biological entity and are found in almost every ecosystem on Earth. This 1-day course gives a comprehensive introduction to bioinformatic resources relevant to viruses, the basics of viral ‘omics (genomics, proteomics, metagenomics, and interactomics) data analysis, and problems faced when analysing viral data.

Audience

This course is intended for bioinformaticians, scientists and clinicians, from academia or industry, who are interested in handling viral data.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, the participants are expected to:
* List bioinformatic resources relevant to viruses
* Describe the type of information that the resources provide
* Explain the analyses that can be performed using this information
* Understand the structure of the data and eventual pitfalls in its analysis

Prerequisites

Knowledge / competencies

This course is designed for beginners. Basic knowledge of ‘omics data is required.

Technical

This course will be streamed; you are thus required to have your own computer with an Internet connection.

Application

The registration fees for academics are 100 CHF and 500 CHF for for-profit companies.
